LIGHTNING TAEKWON-DO
BLACK BELTS

Mr. Tyson Howes - 1st Dan
Tyson began his Taekwon-Do journey at just 5 years old and is now 12, having recently tested for his black belt in November 2024. Over the past two years, he has taken on a leadership role as an assistant instructor in both the Lightning Strikes and Kids classes, demonstrating maturity, patience, and a strong commitment to helping younger students grow. At his most recent tournament in 2025, Tyson delivered an outstanding performance, earning double gold medals in both sparring and patterns.
Outside the dojang, Tyson’s athleticism shines in many arenas. He is an accomplished long-distance runner, winning numerous track and field races and recently earning MVP honors in cross country. He also loves golf and competes regularly, bringing the same focus and discipline to the course that he shows in martial arts. When he’s not training or competing, Tyson enjoys playing the drums and expressing himself through dance. Through Taekwon-Do and his many activities, he continues to build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills that extend into every part of his life.

Miss. Macy Thomas - 1st Dan
Macy began her Taekwondo journey at 9½ years old, earning her black belt by the age of 14½ through dedication and hard work. In her early years, she loved practicing patterns and competing in friendly shield-jumping competitions — even clearing an impressive five shields at just 12 years old. As she’s grown in the sport, Macy has discovered a real love for sparring, especially after winning a gold medal at the Lightning Family Tournament.
Through Taekwondo, Macy has developed strong discipline, patience, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility. These qualities extend far beyond the dojang, positively influencing her personal and school life and giving her greater confidence in herself and her abilities. As a black belt, Macy now has the opportunity to volunteer in the younger classes, supporting students as they learn and grow — an experience that benefits not only the students, but Macy as well.

Miss. Anika Dunn - 1st Dan
Anika started training in Taekwon-Do when she was 9 years old at the earliest opportunity she could once the club opened. After working hard for 4 years, she got her black belt at 13 in December 2025. Over the past 5 years she has been a consistent and enthusiastic member of the club. She has learned leadership through helping junior belts as well as being an assistant instructor in the younger classes. Through Taekwon-Do Anika is learning discipline, respect, and not to give up until you reach your goal. These qualities have helped her in other parts of her life, including school, piano, and rock climbing.
Some of her favorite parts of the sport are sparring, kicks, and the details of how to do each move properly. Anika started Taekwon-Do looking for a way to improve her mental and physical strength and found a martial art she really enjoys and has made an important part of her life. In the future, Anika is excited to go to more seminars and tournaments with the club.
